Ukrainian Psyanky

A few years ago, a woman introduced me to an art style called Psyanky. She learned it from her grandmother who was an immigrant from Ukraine. It’s a rather painstaking and meticulous process that involves blowing out an egg until you have just the clean and hollow shell, and then dying it using a wax-resist method to achieve unique and vibrant patterns. Each color of the process is done one at a time and hand-sealed onto the egg shell using liquid beeswax. Once you’re 4 or 5 colors deep and the egg is thoroughly covered in burnt wax, you give the whole thing a fire bath and wipe the wax off. The finished product is always incredible, even if it’s the simplest of designs. This selection is some of my better ones over the years. While they’re not very traditional, I do think they’re pretty.
